The freeing of the slaves did not justify the killing of 500,000 Americans IMO.

Hell, we won't risk the death of a single American pilot in order to avoid the accidental bombing of Kosovo refugees. Most of the civilian deaths could have been avoided if the pilots had orders to fly low and positively identify their targets before releasing the bombs.

Dear Mr. Long,
Well, thats sort of fudging the matter James. It was over States Rights,
but the whole affair came to blows over apportionment of the territories
applying for statehood as free or slave. So slavery had a very central
role in the Civil War, and if there either was never any slavery or the
entire nation had remained slave states, no doubt there would never have
been a civil war. Until maybe the slave population revolted. ;)
