I want to know those answers too - in more depth than now.

I am not strong enough in this area to really answer these questions at the depth they need to be answered. For this we need someone close to this area to help us out. No, I have not yet attempted direct comparisons - partly for this reason.

What I can see looks good, but that is not really good enough for me.

There are 2 ways to find this out - wait 12-18 months and see what happens with the product, or try to get some serious discussion by knowledgeable people and make a reasonable determination in advance.

I think we would all prefer #2.

I have tried my best to get this going. If anyone knows someone who works in this area and who would like to help us out I am all for it.

<< but i want to read more about why someone may buy someone's new routers over Cisco's stuff. it can't be just down to speed and cost, bc this didn't harm them in the past. >>

Well, I can tell you one thing. They never had a high end box so far behind the startup competitors before.

The bigs came down to the low end of commodity switches and increased the price competition to the point our margins eroded.

Now, CSCO will find intense competition in it's bread and butter area - and they don't have a strong next generation entry there yet, nor does INTC, COMS, CS and others. When you buy someone, it takes a while to integrate the new technology before you have a "true" CSCO product.

It seems to me that the next 12-18 months is an open window for these new companies in this market.

Pigboy, any chance the Ascend GRF (greatly revised) that's due to be announced next month will be in this league? Some think so - check out post #60957 on the ASND thread.

A clip: " People say that they (CSCO) are Kings of Routers. UUnet and 9 others are testing Juniper routers and Ascend will unveil in June 99 their GRF-II which is faster and COMPATIBLE with existing Cisco routers."

If the GRF is a factor then LU is acquiring something of considerable value, IMHO.
