I've seen tomatoes bred to be bruise-free (I don't know if it's by genetic engineering or not) and to have a long shelf life. These goals are certainly achieved: they are durable enough to use as tennis balls, and they look lovely, but the taste just isn't there.

I've also talked to farmers who have been besieged by missionary NGOs (farmers here in the Philippines) urging them to use organic methods. They are taking a completely backwards approach: the farmers would love to use organic methods, but if they bring their produce to market with any spotting, holes, etc., people just won't buy it. I suspect that demand will have to drive supply in this case.
