The featured article in the June issue describes an image-guided surgery system currently in use at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston. The image generation techniques, not the display interface, are the focus of the article. Three dimensional MRI models of tissue are accurately superimposed on top of surgeon's-eye-view video of the patient. The system graphically tracks an infrared surgical probe by triangulation. Real-time updates of the composite image during surgery are expected within a year.

The system's crude display interface requires the surgeon to look back and forth between the patient and a monitor...

The authors see a bright future for image-guided surgery and image-guided medicine in general.
