Apparently the costs are different dependingf on the market you live in...here, dsl is 10/mo less than canble and there is no set up fee for dsl, but there is for cable.....I think it is 100 bucks or so.
I have had dsl since Jan. The phone company had to learn what they were doing, but now the service is excellent and I would recommend it

Steve,
The pros and cons will really depend on the availabilities and price structure in your area as well as the quality of your local cable provider.

I live in a suburb of Washington, DC & Baltimore and our local cable provider (Comcast) has been extremely reliable. I have had the @Home service for over 3 months now and have yet to have an outage or experience any delays. Around here, @Home is quite a bit less expensive than DSL. Do look at the connection charge (@Home always has "specials" going on which give you free set-up) as well as the time it takes to get service.

Also, when you compare fee structures realize that DSL has a variety of speed options, and the faster speeds cost quite a bit more. Below are the local DSL costs in my region from Bell Atlantic. My local @Home rates are under $40 month (including the cable modem and ISP charges) and installation was free. Plus, in my market the @Home speeds are at the high end of DSL's.

Infospeed 640Kbps $39.95
Infospeed 1.6Mbps $59.95
Infospeed 7.1Mbps $109.95

One-time charges include the following:
Service Connection Charge: $99.00
DSL Modem: $325.00
Turnkey Home Installation: $99.00

Again, the quality of your local cable provider, and the service availabilty and pricing from your local DSL providers, will be the key factors. No matter which way you go you will be a much happier surfer!

Good luck!

As an follow-up to my last post, note that in my region DSL has ADDITIONAL ISP charges which range from $10 to $80 per month (the higher the speed the more the ISP costs are). See chart at bell-atl.com for details.

There are more ISP options than @Home has (of course, people are buying such services for the bandwidth and not the ISP), but it will potentially (depending on the DSL provider) allow you to use AOL for your ISP. @Home gives you minimal content, but they may be changing as they integrate Excite into their operation.

When totaling up all the costs for DSL make sure you have fresh batteries in your calculator: DSL monthly fees, ISP monthly fees, connection/set-up charge, modem purchase, turn-key internal wiring, etc...

It was a no-brainer for me, but good luck in your decision making process.

Steve

I've had Roadrunner cable service for almost one year and I love it compared to my old telephone modem. Cable cost $49.95 for installation but the first months fee was waived ($39.95). I still access AOL through my cable ISP for a cost of $7.95 per month extra (unlimited hours). Web pages usually snap up on my screen (I have a 16mb video card). I've downloaded a huge Netscape 4.6 file of 25mb in about two to three minutes. I've had some transaction slowdowns when cable is being repaired or whatever but generally service is good. Never lost Roadrunner cable during a storm but lost TV cable when it LOOKED like rain.

In conclusion, I can't talk about dsl but I like cable and would purchase it again. Monthly cost is $39.95 for Roadrunner and this includes the cable modem and 10/100Base-TX network interface card.
