Thanks for your opinion on home schooling and the difficulties some teenagers face in school, E. I was basically asking anyone who wanted to venture an opinion what they thought, so certainly I appreciate your thoughtful reply.

I have been doing a lot of reading and listening about high schools recently. It seems that what happened at Columbine has led to more parents looking for options, especially to very large schools where children are essentially numbers. My nephew, who will be a sophomore next year, is going to attend a small "school within a school" where there are very small classes, and the students apprentice with adults in the community in their area of interest (which would be music, for my nephew). Another trend, at least in the San Francisco area, is for "middle colleges", where bright but disaffected teenagers who are underachieving take junior college courses and are closely supervised by advisors who help them find their way and develop an inner sense of structure so they can succeed in such an atmosphere. The students often end up accumulating high school and college credits at the same time, and graduating substantially early from high school, which is also true of home schoolers.

I agree with you that it's important to listen to teenagers who are unhappy, and arrive at solutions that nurture them and don't cause terrible pain. The teenage suicide rate is very high; unhappiness in school is a major reason for that.
