Oracle8i(TM) Lite Chosen Over Sybase by Leading Independent Software Vendors PR Newswire - May 24, 1999 08:19
Superior Functionality and Oracle Internet Platform Benefits Cited by ISVs
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., May 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Underscoring Oracle8i(TM) Lite's leading position in mobile computing, Oracle today announced that four Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) have chosen Oracle8i Lite over Sybase SQL Anywhere. Datastructures, Inc., Future Horizons, MapFrame, and Partnerware Technologies, Inc. have chosen to go mobile with Oracle8i Lite, citing requirements for scalability, reliability and availability that only the Oracle Internet platform can provide.
DataStructures, Inc., a major real estate company, has developed an Internet-based tracking system that allows appraisers or managers to create or track an appraisal report. Reports created by appraisers are stored in an Oracle(R) database that managers can access through a Web browser, enabling them to track projects from anywhere in the world.
"We chose Oracle8i Lite over Sybase to build our tracking system because it is easier to program and provides better scalability and functionality," said Mark Minic, vice president of marketing at DataStructures, Inc. "This system, which will shave one-third off the time it takes to complete the report and reduce the number of people needed to get the job done, also allows managers to see in real time the workload of each appraiser so they can better plan distribution of work to meet deadlines."
Future Horizons provides a suite of advanced mobile solutions for computer-aided dispatch, work order management, asset tracking, and inventory control to organizations in both the energy (gas and electric utilities, water & sewer, gas & oil pipeline) and communications (wireline, wireless, cellular) markets. Having evaluated Sybase SQL Anywhere and Oracle8i Lite, Future Horizons selected Oracle because of Oracle's leading role in the energy and communications sectors and superior product offering.
"Oracle was the only vendor that allowed us to offer a complete end-to-end solution," said Joe Mediate, president, Future Horizons. "Oracle8i Lite has the ability to be embedded within our existing software. Our customers realize a lower Total Cost of Ownership by not having to install or manage additional software."
MapFrame develops smart, simple field automation solutions for electric and gas utilities, cable companies, and government agencies. MapFrame switched from Sybase SQL Anywhere to Oracle8i Lite because of its greater adoption in the utilities sector, its ease of deployment, and its ability to leverage and interface with other Oracle database components, including Oracle Spatial. MapFrame is currently incorporating Oracle8i Lite as the database for its suite of mobile map-based applications to deliver the power and functionality of desktop systems in a form uniquely suited to a mobile environment.
"Our customers benefit from the presence of a true database engine suited for mobile platforms," said Paul Wilson, president at MapFrame. "Since many MapFrame customers have utilized the Oracle Internet platform in their corporate environments, the extension of the platform to the field brings added benefits without significant additional support."
Partnerware Technologies, Inc. is a leading provider of extranet software applications designed to enable the indirect sales model. Having evaluated Sybase SQL Anywhere, Partnerware Technologies chose Oracle8i Lite for its unique ability to support multiple platforms for different usage patterns and for its Web-to-Go functionality. The ability to mobilize quickly through Web-to-Go without recoding was key to developing mobile applications using the same code base.
"Oracle8i Lite is an ideal platform for offering our clients universal access to Partnerware Extended Enterprise(TM)," said Kevin Carlson, chief technology officer of Partnerware Technologies. "Using Oracle Lite, we can enable our users with portable devices (e.g., PDA's, laptops, palmtops) to get up and go while still having the benefits of their Partnerware application and data at their fingertips."
