Sorry, Michael, I was not reacting to the Indian discussion, which I skimmed, but to the Civil War discussion. Lincoln did not launch an anti- slavery crusade and march savagely into the South. The South seceded in anticipation of the eventual erosion of its position as new states entered the Union, and fired upon a Federal outpost as it was being reprovisioned. The reason the South attempted to break away was slavery, and therefore it is truer to say that the Confederacy was willing to cause untold suffering in a doomed attempt to preserve human bondage. To find someone insensitive to that reality is disturbing. To then have that person make a comment like "everyone is racist", is almost more than one can bear...

By the way, Michael, I generally agree that people are too quick to brand things racist. On the other hand, on this thread it has been an actual problem, and so if I have leapt too fast, that is why....
