Symbol Introduces Rugged, Pocket-Sized Computers With Wireless LAN and
Web Browsing Capability Based On Palm III Architecture
BUSINESS WIRE - 08:47 a.m. May 24, 1999 Eastern

Leading Retailer to Use for In-Store Applications

HOLTSVILLE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 24, 1999--
Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: SBL) today introduced the Symbol
SPT 1700 product family - rugged, pocket-sized computers with advanced
wireless local area network (LAN) communications, Web browsing and
integrated scanning capabilities, based on 3Com's popular Palm III
architecture - that allows users to gather information at the point of
activity.

The SPT 1740 allows users to communicate in real-time over Symbol's
Spectrum24(R) wireless LAN, providing up-to-the-minute information
flow, in addition to enabling them to manage schedules, personal
information, contacts, and e-mail - all the traditional uses of the device.
The SPT 1700 product family can withstand four-foot drops to concrete
and is water and dust resistant. Famous Footwear Uses SPT 1740

In addition, Symbol announced its first SPT 1740 customer, Famous
Footwear, a leading shoe retailer based in Madison, WI, with more than
900 stores throughout the United States. Famous Footwear will provide
the pocket-sized computers, which will be Web-enabled, to its in-store
staff, enabling them to quickly look up prices, check inventory and stock
counting. The devices will allow communications through the Famous
Footwear Intranet, allowing the most current company information to be
available instantly.

"Symbol's SPT 1740 computers will enable us to improve customer
service by providing our store managers and staff the most up to date
information" said Earl Fischer, vice president, information services,
Famous Footwear. "In the past, our sales associates would have to go
back and forth between the sales floor and stock room to get important
information. Now, using Symbol's SPT 1740, our sales associates can
instantly obtain information in real-time without leaving the customer's
side.

According to Ron Goldman, vice president of mobile systems, Symbol
Technologies, "Users in a number of markets will love this easy-to-use,
pocket-size device because it can gather and distribute data, in real-time,
from the user's hand, at the point of activity." About Symbol
