I don't know how much MSFT would get for each Windows CE installation from HP, Dell, Philips etc. (For Windows 98---i think it is only $55 per installation). Although 3COM's palm pilot is the market leader, I don't believe it could hold onto that lead considering that the big PC companies are entering the market with MSFT's operating system. Sooner or later (i think it is sooner), Windows CE type of palm PCs are going to become the standard. My understanding is that certain hardware shortage (related to screens--i read recently) has slowed down the sales of the CE machines. Even if MSFT was to get $15 to $20 per installation, it will translate into a lot of dollars.
Furthermore, i bet the IE will be customized for such machines running CE, giving it a clear advantage over 3COM.

I don't think there is any slowing down of MSFT's revenues as those predicting the end of the PC age seem to indicate.
