Permit a quick, but stupid question.

Stupid questions are my especialty lately. So allow me quick response.

That didn't come out right...your question is not stupid its admirably direct.

PM and DI do different things. PM lets you make, move, resize, delete , clone, convert file format of, partitions. It RUNs in Windows, NT included.

DI, Direct Image is a DOS app makes and restores image files of already existing partitions, such as PM has created for you. They're called .PQI files and can be compressed and stored anywhere until the need arises to restore a previous more healthy partition in place of a problematic one.

Clarence was right, DI and PM do different things. In a perfect world you would never need PM to modify partitions on an existing drive. But no matter how much you plan and think about how to partition that new 25 gig IBM drive you just bought, you always have a need to change it later. Also PM is indispensable when setting up multiple primary partitions on a drive. It is also the only was (or at least the easiest) to get NT booting on a larger than 4 gig partition.

I wish Powerquest would come out with a mongo, complete, all encompassing utility combining PM, DI, Lost and Found, Drive Copy, Boot Manager, that would do it all.

IMHO, on any large drive with multiple OSes, PM is a necessity, as is DI.

Good Luck
