Cahners In-Stat Group Reports Another Strong Quarter for
the Router Market - BUSINESS WIRE, 08:03 a.m. May 24, 1999 Eastern

NEWTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 24, 1999--Cahners In-Stat Group
reports that the total worldwide router market for Q199 finished with 12 percent growth.

This is the first time that the market has had double-digit growth rates in end-use revenue
in over nine quarters. Cisco's excellent performance across all router segments, as well
as their strong presence in the market, drove the growth for the first quarter, according to
Cahners In-Stat Group.

"The market really follows Cisco's lead since they own more than 60 percent of the
end-use revenue in all three segments: low-end, mid-range and high-end," explained
Emmy Johnson, senior analyst for Cahners In-Stat Group's Networking Services.

"Although Cisco did very well, other vendors like 3Com
and ACC also had excellent quarters." Overall the demand
for voice as well as low-end routers is creating lucrative
opportunities for vendors in this market.
Cahners In-Stat Group also reports:

-- Unit shipments also experienced healthy demand, growing at 17
percent.

-- Over the past three quarters, low-end routers have seen a nice
steady increase in unit shipments, which can be attributed to the
SOHO sector. These units are priced competitively and appeal to a
much wider audience.

-- In the SOHO segment, Cisco, Ascend and 3Com lead the market with
49 percent, 15 percent and 10 percent share respectively.
The report, Q1 1999 Router Market Analysis, No.CQ9902M2, includes detailed market
shares a rolling three-quarter forecast of the Router market. The report was written by
Johnson.
