Sony Gears Up for DVD+RW Launch; Internal 3.0GB Drive to Usher in the Next Generation of Removable Storage SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 24, 1999--Sony today announced plans to introduce an internal 3.0GB DVD+RW drive. The model DRX101S/C is expected to deliver new levels of performance, capacity and versatility for a variety of storage needs and applications, such as backup and archive, multimedia presentations, web storage, and home video. DVD+RW is backed by the industry leaders in CD-ReWritable technology, the worldwide standard for interchange. "The Sony DVD+RW drive is the ultimate all-in-one storage device," said Bob DeMoulin, marketing manager of value added products for Sony Electronics' Component Company. "It's like having a second hard drive and backup device that can also playback DVD movies, read CD-ROMs and play audio CDs." The model DRX101S/C supports 1~1.25X DVD recording (1.4~1.7 MB/sec), 1X~2.5X DVD read speed (1.4~3.5MB/sec), 24X (max.) CD-ROM playback (3.6 MB/sec), and incorporates a SCSI-2 interface. The drive is expected to come bundled with all of the essential tools necessary to take advantage of the tremendous capabilities of DVD, including UDF File System software for easy drive-letter access to 3.0GB of storage capacity, a SCSI interface card, and other useful software applications and utilities. "A DVD+RW disc looks and acts just like a typical CD, making it very familiar for endusers to handle and use," added DeMoulin. "Unlike some other technologies, no special caddy is needed for either recording or reading." The model DRX101S/C internal DVD+RW drive is targeted for availability in the Fall of 1999. All Sony storage products are backed by all-hours, toll-free technical support and a limited one-year warranty. Sony Electronics Inc.
