"Question -- CMGI split was "recorded" 5/13 and is effective
5/27. That means that you must have owned shares as of
5/13 to participated in the split. Yes?"

not exactly...

the "record date" doesn't have much application anymore.
in the days before all this was done electronically, people held shares
in their own name, and their purchases had to be on "record" by a certain date, to get their split shares mailed to them on time.
the "effective date, or "date payable", is the last day the stock trades
before the shares outstanding, and the stock price are adjusted for the split.

but today most shares are held in the street name (your broker), so the only date that really much matters anymore is the "Ex-date": the day the shares will actually begin trading at the split price.

you can buy shares or derivatives right up to the closing bell in the
session immediately prior to the "ex-date", and still participate in any split, on any stock.
