For example I keep some funds in a bank making the fabulous return of 3%.
I keep my "spending cash" in a portfolio market rate account which yields on average about 7% at the moment. I can write checks on this account, and I can instantly transfer to any of my standard checking or savings accounts. In addition all of my checking accounts use the market rate account for overdraft protection so even if I forget to do a transfer my indiscretions are covered. A lot better than the standard "bank rate".
