Is this guy a Whimpy Whiner??........... BellSouth's CEO Makes Appeal to Regulators: Bring Broadband to All Americans SAVANNAH, Ga., May 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Delivering the promise of high-speed, broadband networks to all Americans is a worthy goal for the country, said Duane Ackerman, chairman and chief executive of BellSouth Corp. (NYSE: BLS - news), to an audience of 250 at the Southeastern Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (SEARUC) annual conference today. ''Business is already getting broadband. In the next year, great numbers of affluent neighborhoods will see broadband. Densely populated areas will get broadband, (but) not so in rural areas; nor is it likely to happen in many poor neighborhoods,'' Ackerman said. ''There are only two ways to get broadband to all homes in America in the near term...an upgraded, rebuilt cable TV system and an upgraded, rebuilt phone system.'' Well quit yaking and get to work!! Ackerman explained that while policy is investment-friendly toward the deployment of high-speed lines for the cable industry, investment-friendly??? How about "Big time customer demand" friendly?!! the phone industry has a number of regulatory hurdles that hinder a high-speed network buildout to reach American homes, particularly in rural areas and poor neighborhoods. The disincentives that must be changed include provisions for Bell phone companies to form separate subsidiaries in order to transport data and the requirement to sell network elements to competitors at discounted prices. Ahh too bad...now they have to share the monopoly. Gee shuckers. ''The upgraded, rebuilt telephone network is not being encouraged in the same fashion (as cable). That's not a good thing for consumers,'' Ackerman said. He added that Congress will be introducing legislation to remove the investment discrepancy between broadband cable and broadband telephone network deployment. Ackerman also pointed to on-line education as a real-life example of the benefits that can come with the deployment of high-speed telephone networks. Wow...now isn't he a whiz kid! Whew SMOKIN!!! ''(On-line education) has become a real boon to working adults. It's a means for people to move out of dead-end jobs or to move up to a better one,'' he said. ''Some 300 colleges and universities are now offering degrees on- line.'' Prestigious universities such as Duke, Stanford, Georgia Tech and Tulane are included among the 300 schools offering degrees. ''Whether you live in a suburb, the inner city, in an Appalachian hollow or in the Mississippi Delta, you can go on-line to get an education,'' Ackerman said. He added that poor and rural neighborhoods would benefit most from widespread deployment of high-speed telephone networks. BellSouth is a $23 billion communications services company.
