I think it is a positive indicator, but I use it with a lot of caution. I would never use it as the sole reason to buy a stock. Some people might go so far as to call it a "random" indicator, since after a positive recommendation the stock might go down, or with a downgrade, the price might go up.

My observation is that a positive or negative recommendation might momentarily drive the stock price up or down 10 to 20 percent, but the effect wears off in a few days. I feel it is more indicative of a stock price trend if several analysts all vote in the same direction over a relatively short period of time.

For the most part, I use the analyst ratings as a method of sorting a group of stocks to get a different perspective. It only gives me a starting point for further review.
