Symbol unveils wireless pocket-sized computer

May 24, 1999 09:03 AM
NEW YORK, May 24 (Reuters) - Handheld computer and scanning device company Symbol Technologies Inc. SBL on Monday unveiled a robust range of wireless, pocket-sized computers based on 3Com Corp.'s COMS popular Palm III technology.

Symbol, perhaps best-known for its systems to scan bar codes, said the computers allow communication in real time over a local wireless network, offering information from databases, instant messages and access to e-mail.

Symbol has targeted the tough new pocket-sized machine, known as the SPT 1700, at niche industrial markets, such as retail. 3Com's step to license out Palm technology marks a step by the company to generate further revenue off the trail-blazing information devices.

The first customer for the pocket-sized Symbol computers is Madison, Wis.-based shoe retail chain Famous Footwear. Staff at the 900-store chain will use the SPT 1700 products to look up prices, check inventory and send messages through the company Intranet, an internal communications network.

Moonray: Thanks for the info....$10/mo is a bargain when one compares the price of web phones and access charges that phone companies will charge!
