TOKYO -- NEC Corp. here said its new 0.18-micron system-on-a-chip (SOC) production line at its Yamagata, Japan, fab will start operations in October, three months ahead of schedule.

NEC accelerated the equipping and qualifying of the new line to meet increased demand for the system-level chips needed in multimedia and telecommunications products. Originally, NEC had planned to bring up the new logic and embedded-memory line at the beginning of 2000.

The faster pace in SOC production is in stark contrast to DRAM production lines, where NEC and other Japanese chip makers are holding down capacity until the market recovers.

NEC said the first-stage SOC production at Yamagata will be 5,000 wafers a month, increasing to 10,000 wafers in 2000. The company it has invested about $330 million in the new line. -- Jack Robertson
