At Home Will Name Excite's Bell President After Acquisition

Redwood City, California, May 24 (Bloomberg) -- At Home Corp., the top provider of high-speed Internet access through cable-TV lines, said it will name Excite Inc. Chief Executive George Bell as president after it completes its $8.5 billion acquisition of Excite Friday.

At Home Chairman and CEO Tom Jermoluk will name George Bell president of the new company at a shareholders meeting Friday to approve the acquisition. Bell, who will also join the board, will be part of a newly created executive office that consists of him and Jermoluk. Jermoluk will retain the titles of chairman and CEO and has no plans to step down.

Redwood City, California-based At Home said in January that it would buy No. 2 Internet search service Excite to beef up its Web content. It's betting that more Internet users will shift to high-speed Internet access through cable-TV lines instead of their conventional telephone dial-up links.

Jermoluk ''wanted a strong partner to run the day-to-day operations so he could focus on the strategy of the company, its vision, its relationships with Wall Street and cable partners,'' At Home spokesman Matt Wolfrom said.

An Excite spokeswoman declined to comment.

Shares of Redwood City, California-based Excite fell 9 11/16 to 123 1/4 in early afternoon trading while At Home fell 9 1/2 to 120 1/2.
