Polluting Mexican refinery told to halve output
MONTERREY, Mexico, May 21 (Reuters) - Mexican silver mining giant Penoles has been ordered to halve production at one of its plants as officials tighten emergency measures to combat a child lead-poisoning epidemic, officials said on Friday.
Mexican authorities declared an environmental emergency at the metals refinery on May 5 and ordered Industriales Penoles, the world's biggest silver producer, to clean up its mess in the northern desert town of Torreon, where 1,166 children were found to have unacceptable levels of lead in their bloodstreams.
The company has removed more than 120 tonnes of lead-contaminated dust from Torreon's Luis Echeverria district, but officials said they were still finding the metal in concentrations well above international standards.
On Friday they stepped up the measures to counter what could be one of Mexico's worst environmental disasters.(cont)
