So would any other company be that hires a few engineers and discovers how to stream a compressed audio signal - my wife - a computer scientist could do that.

Could your wife convince Intel, @Home, Lotus, IBM, Thomson, AT&T, AOL, Sun Microsystems, Macromedia, Liquid Audio, and NetGravity, among others, to sign partnership agreements and content co-development rights?

so why hasn't your wife done just that? Betacom also was better than VHS, but that's not what videos are taped on..it's a matter of being the first to set a standard..
