Wireless data : reality check >

Skeptisim about CDMA carriers' interest in data may
be unfounded...

Your're right that additional channels for higher data rates
leave fewer for voice calls.. but, expensive
base station (vocoder) and PSTN resources are not tied up
for data calls.. i.e. if the carrier is smart,
they could position data calls for cheaper service and
make their CDMA service really attractive!!

For instance, in Japan, email over embedded
browser is a huge selling feature... think it costs just
10 yen to send an email!! All the teenagers are
sending each other short email messages in the subways
and elsewhere...

Also, the cdmaOne phones with browsers are selling like
hot cakes in Japan!! All cdmaOne phones there support
upto 14.4 kbps asynch. and packet data (from laptop)
High Speed CDMA data services in Japan and Korea is
going to be a reality soon...

Question is (like I asked several weeks before), why are we
behind in the US? More skepticism? ;-)
