Noticed a couple of posts regarding Japanese retail PC sales this year. I've been tracking the numbers since the beginning of the year. PC sales have increased by an average of 64.2% in units and 61.8% in revenue year over year. While 98 was a pretty bad year for PC sales in Japan this can only be considered good news for the PC industry. In 98 total PC sales were about 7.9M units. IDC had originally forcast 10% growth this year but it appears likely that will be exceeded by a good amount. For what it's worth consumer PCs were about 2.6M and business PC units about 5.2M. Top PC companies taking the overall market into consideration:

NEC 24.8%
Fujitsu 23.1%
IBM 10.2%
Toshiba 7.2%
Hitachi 5.5%
Apple 5.1%
CPQ 3.8%
Sony 3.8%
Dell 3.1%
Sharp 2.2%

Incidentally, Apple and Sony have been making big moves this year primarily in the consumer market. Apple is estimated at about 18% of the consumer market so far this year. Disclosure, I trade Apple stock. Rich
