EURO BLAMED FOR VIOLENT CLASHES AT FRENCH POST OFFICE
January 7, 1999

EUROPE'S first "euro-riot" erupted yesterday in Marseilles when dozens of frustrated benefit claimants smashed up three post offices, blaming the single currency for a major computer breakdown that has blocked their payments since the new year.

Their protests, promptly suppressed by riot police, followed unsuccessful attempts to claim unemployment benefit, child allowance and income-support. Hundreds of thousands of savings-account holders at La Poste - which doubles as one of France's biggest banks - were also prevented from withdrawing money following the crash of the computer system handling such transactions ...

The system was adapted to make it "euro-compatible" last week following the fixing of the franc-euro parities. Since the adaptation, which required intensive work by thousands of technicians, the system has repeatedly crashed, although La Poste has said this was a coincidence.
