E-tail and Wave Ok, so I ordered some Wave paraphenalia thru my GSN account. Of course, the first thing that came to mind was a question that was discussed a while back, but never answered, at least to my satisfaction. Why can't Wave/Embassy be used to purchase merchandise? I know SS has said that's not the focus, but have things changed? The execution of my Wave order sure was seemless. Take a look at the electronic receipt that was e-mailed to me after my purchase: ------------------------------------------------------- 1999-05-24 18:32:58 Dear Slate: Thank you for your purchase of "1 set(s) Wave coffee mug + 1 Wave cap"[HGPS00R0M1C1WXL01.txt]! The purchase was $40.00, which has been debited from your account, leaving you with a balance of $74.66. This item was published by: Wave Systems Corp. This file, when purchased, is a simple text file and is displayed in a browser to you immediately. This is in a format recognized by Web Browsers. All Browsers have the capability to save displayed files. If you wish to save the purchased TXT file then simply select "Save As..." choice in the file drop down menu at the top of you browser. If you have any additional questions or problems, please contact Wave Customer Service at: 1-800-WAVE-NET or send email to support@wavesys.com. Regards, Wave Customer Service 1-800-WAVE-NET (1-800-928-3638) support@wavesys.com ------------------------------------------------------- Notice within the body of the receipt the unique text file that was generated (HGPS00R0M1C1WXL01.txt). Sure, looks like the technology can be adapted quite easily to hard merchandise. This file was generated dynamically by my order, smo'd and then delivered to my browser and e-mail account, unencrypted and displayed. Notice also the line, "This file, when purchased, is a simple text file and is displayed in a browser to you immediately. This is in a format recognized by Web Browsers.". Hmmm... I think the folks in Lee have been tinkering around with the merchandise concept more than they'll let on. The best part is that handling merchandise is essentially no different than digital content to WaveNet, no silicon changes are required. I believe it would simply require some additional infrastructure, namely some additional back-end processing and an interface to an order entry system. Wondering if we will soon just be saying, "All Things?" ---Slate
