I think this time Alan Greenspan and the gang have succeeded in striking fear in the minds of investors. They were assisted in part by the CPI figures. Adding to all this is the proverbial summer swoon when kids are getting out of school and people are taking money out of the stock market and getting ready with their plans for vacation, sending kids to camp etc. (all this costs money)

Now let us see what will happen when they come back from summer vacations in September. Companies will have released their earnings in July and getting ready to release the 3Q earnings around the Sept. Oct. time frame. Gas prices have already started to come down so the CPI numbers will look better then. Companies will start to release their early computer orders for delivery in 1Q 2000 (after Y2K is past). INTC, AMAT, CSCO and e-commerce will predict booming sales for 4Q and 1Q. AND GUESS WHAT!! The stock market will pick up again. The Internets will pick up and this time a few (surely our beloved AOL) will benefit from the runup in the stock market.

But surely, this is not the doom and gloom for AOL. Compare the % drop for AOL relative to % drop for the Dow, Nasdaq and other Internet stocks.
Now crazy software going haywire etc. Just a seasonal phenomena in my opinion.
