Maybe the Germans have a word for it, something about taking sorrow in one's joys? I am only German via my mother's mother's father, but my husband is half German, and I get to see the personality in all its complex splendor. The other half is so-called "Scots-Irish", which is only hypenated because we are talking about one of the more indigestible combinations of all time.
