SCUMbria - Re: "Do you believe that the benchmark numbers are close?"

YOU BET I DO !!

1. The WIndows 98 logo contains an Authentic AMD designation, along with the AMD corporate LOGO and the 128 MegaBytes of DRAM - all indicating the STCKED DECK SYSTEM that AMD delivers to its favorite sites to get the best perfromance. An IBM UltraDMA 66,7200 RPM Disk Drive was also thrown in to help accelerate that DAWG, as was an NVIDIA TNT2 Ultra graphics card to give the K7 EVERY REASONABLE ADVANTAGE IT COULD HAVE.

2. The FIRING SQUAD reported ALMOST IDENTICAL results as AnandTech reported for BOTH a 550 MHz K7 AND a 500 MHz Pentium /// - both under Windows 98 for Business Winstone 99.

anandtech.com

[Note - Anand refers to an "UN-NAMED 550 MHz CPU" in his Business Winstone 99 chart - which he verified later was indeed a K7 - the SAME SPEED that Firing Squad happened to get !!!]

The numbers were 550 MHz K7: 24.4(Firing Squad) & 25.1 (Anand)

and 500 MHz Pentium ///: 24.0 (Firing Squad) & 23.3 (Anand)

These TWO CHIPs - a 550 MHz K7 and a 500 MHz Pentium /// - under the SAME BENCHMARK TEST - by TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TESTING sites - Firing Squad & AnandTech - yielded ESSENTIALLY IDENTICAL RESULTS !

Thus, these results have a TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF VALIDITY !

There is no reason to doubt the veracity of the other tests performed by the Firing Squad , even though the FPU tests were not YET reported by Anand for corroboration.
