asic news 05/24 19:36 EST NEC ELECTRONICS GIVES SOC DESIGNERS FLEXIBILITY FOR HIGH-SPEED INTERFACE Integration Scalable Gigabit SerDes ASIC Core SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Adding to its stable of intellectual property (IP) cores for SOC design, NEC Electronics Inc. today announced the availability of a scalable gigabit Serializer/Deserializer (SerDes) ASIC core. This high-performance serial-interface core is supported by 0.25 micron CMOS process technology and designed for networking switches and routers, high-speed back-plane and high-end mass storage applications. As part of NEC Electronics' aggressive drive to deliver SOC solutions, the new core gives designers the flexibility to implement single- or multiple-macro solutions in a single building block, significantly reducing power consumption, die size and cost. To create a cost-competitive solution, NEC Electronics has developed SerDes core architecture implementing a "common block" that eliminates redundancies in designs using multiple instances of SerDes. This approach has the flexibility of implementing up to 16 or more Tx/Rx blocks per "common" block, hence saving valuable space, power and cost. "By offering this SerDes core, NEC Electronics is reinforcing its commitment to the long-term needs of high-speed data transfer applications," said Peyman Kazemkhani, marketing manager of NEC Electronics' ASIC strategic business unit. "This innovative approach satisfies today's size and power reduction requirements, and is also geared up for the escalating speed and multiplicity requirements of the future." NECEL Gives SOC Designers Flexibility for High-speed Interface Integration The NEC Electronics SerDes core is a 2.5 Volt I/O hard macro that supports all three embodiments of the 1000BaseX PHY sub layer, including 1000Base-LX for long wavelength optical transmission, 1000Base-SX for short wave optical transmission and 1000Base-CX for operations over single copper medium. Developed on the physical transmission specifications of the IEEE 802.3z Gigabit Ethernet standard and ANSI X3T11 Fibre Channel Protocol, the SerDes core handles data transfer rates of up to 1.25 gigabit per second (Gb/s) per instance. Other advanced features include: * Rx to Tx serial loopback mode * Byte/bit sync indicator per instance * Interfaces to PMD optical modules, electrical cables and backplanes * TX buffers that can be enabled or disabled even in loop-back test modes * PLL source recovered clock of 62.5 or 125 MHz * Built-In-Self-Test (BIST) * PLL lock to reference clock indicator SOC Solutions for High Speed Data Transfer Based on the company's 0.25 micron (drawn) CMOS process technology, the NECEL SerDes PHY is a cost-effective solution that allows high level ASIC integration. It joins NECEL's line-up of additional IP cores for the high-speed interface market such as 622MHz LVDS I/O, Rambus D-RAC, and can be integrated with other cores and user-defined logic to achieve system-level solutions. Availability As a part of the company's CB-C10 family of 0.25-micron cell-based ASIC offerings, NECEL is currently shipping SerDes test chips containing five instances of core on a single chip, and evaluation boards containing noise and pattern generators. Volume production is expected to begin in June, 1999. (1) About NEC Electronics Inc.
