Blue, I was only amplifying on X's remark. Take it up with her -- if you dare! <gg>

Actually, I agree with you too, when you talk about those who have little but the shirt on their backs. My impression, however, that they are not the people X was talking about.

And I have to disagree about the "exclusive club". There are people who really enjoy the idea that others will broil in Hell, while they, as privileged club members, will be sitting pretty up in Heaven, watching. We have already discussed the emotion this evokes: Schadenfreude.

Almost all primitive peoples believe in God- and little kids will make up their own if you don't give them one- the real evolutionary step is figuring out a way to live if life has no extrinsic meaning, and if there is nothing else but what is here. Of course that is a lot harder to do the more difficult your life is. I do not say this is the "correct" way to live I only say it is more difficult, takes more thought, religion seems to fit the well worn paths of most people's synapses.

And on a tangent- for some reason the spellcheck function on SI did not highlight the word "Almsot" - is there such a word? A person to whom alms have been given who thereupon inebriates himself?

<<< I think that's a step up the evolutionary ladder from not believing in God at all.>>>

Evolution from what to what? From virtuous deist to evil atheist? Law abiding deist to criminal atheist? Educated deist to ignorant atheist?

Atheism statistically correlates with increase in education and decrease in criminality.

Why you should think it more evolved to believe that responsibility resides in a being external to one than in oneself I can't imagine.
