This doesn't sound like a box maker to me!!
Well - it is another example of DELL the fast follower. The WBEM initiative (Web Based Enterprise Management) was driven by CPQ starting in 1996. In 1997 IBM, HP, Microsoft and several others got on the bandwagon. CPQ and Microsoft recently expanded WBEM to cluster management. CPQ also supports a "headless" version of this with its server appliance products, so one can even monitor the boot process via a web browser - a great bit of technology and plenty hard to do since there is no OS or TCP/IP stack loaded at boot.

About the time clients start demanding WEBM interfaces on new systems, DELL gets with the program. Otherwise they would be handing a competitive advantage to CPQ, IBM and HP which is just not their style.
