3Com Unveils QoS Bandwidth Management, VPN, VoIP Solutions at SCTE Convention Booth Demonstrations to Showcase Home Networking Cable Solutions, CableLabs-Certified Products SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 25, 1999-- 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS) today introduced a variety of data-over-cable applications at the Society of Cable and Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) annual convention in Orlando, including the industry's first Quality of Service (QoS) system and Virtual Private Network (VPN) solutions bundle. These solutions will be demonstrated at 3Com's booth, No. 262, at the Orlando Convention Center. "The breadth of our product line demonstrates 3Com's commitment to the data-over-cable business," said Levent Gun, vice president and general manager for 3Com's Cable Access Division. "3Com is focused on delivering far-reaching, end-to-end software and hardware solutions that develop the entire market." Interoperability remains a critical element to the cable industry as it moves toward mass-market deployment of cable modems. To demonstrate interoperability across brands and among varying cable access solutions, modems of both 3Com and Thomson that are CableLabs 1.0 certified will be incorporated into 3Com's Bandwidth Manager QoS demonstration. "Many operators associate Quality of Service with the coming DOCSIS 1.1 specification, however the Bandwidth Manager system delivers revenue opportunities such as tiered services today," added Mr. Gun. Bandwidth Manager 3Com's Bandwidth Manager QoS kit is the cable industry's first ready-to-use QoS system. The kit utilizes the existing Cable Access Router and Upstream Receiver Cards within the 3Com(R) Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) in combination with the EdgeServer(TM) integrated NT server card. The Bandwidth Manager software highlights the flexibility of the CableLabs 1.0 platform through support of up to eight service tiers with definable priority settings. It also enables Committed Information Rate (CIR) or Minimum Data Rates (MDR) for any CableLabs 1.0-compliant cable modem. The Bandwidth Manager system is designed to be easily upgraded to CableLabs 1.1 hardware and features when available. VPN Solution Bundle 3Com's field-ready QoS system is further enhanced through a VPN solution bundle. Incremental to the tiering capability provided by 3Com's Bandwidth Manager, the VPN kit uses leading edge 3Com networking technology to deliver a secure, bandwidth-efficient business solution that cable operators can offer to the commercial market segment. IP Telephony Solution In addition to VPN-over-cable, 3Com is displaying a broad range of system solutions, representative of the company's "whole market" approach to IP telephony. Featured in the booth is a working, deliverable solution for integrated voice-and-data services. This small business system leverages technology developed by NBX Corporation, a leading developer of network-based telephony systems purchased by 3Com in March of 1999. 3Com estimates the worldwide market for LAN telephony will be approximately $5 billion by 2003, with more than two-thirds of the sales coming from small- to medium-sized businesses. Data Network Management Applications 3Com is also featuring several new network management applications, the Cable Management System (CMS) and Cable Management System Lite (CMS Lite) software suites, that help cable operators monitor the elements of their data-over-cable system in an intuitive, user-friendly manner: 3Com's CMS aids the cable data network operator in effectively managing the CMTS and its connected modems. The application enables the operator to easily view and manage all aspects of the network, including the software versions of all the cards in the chassis, multiple chassis simultaneously, multiple downstreams per chassis and the number and status of modems currently connected. CMS Lite is a read only version of the CMS and is ideal for monitoring the network, diagnostics and trouble checking. This product is targeted towards cable operators whose cable data network is being managed by external parties (such as @Home affiliates). Home Networking 3Com will demonstrate a family of home networking solutions for connecting multiple users, supporting applications such as shared PC accessories, multi-player gaming, and cost-effective "second outlet" service tiers when coupled with 3Com's Bandwidth Manager QoS kit. These products are scheduled to be available to consumers later this year. Full Line of Cable Modems 3Com's full-family of cable modem can also be seen at their booth, including the CableLabs-certified external cable modem with Ethernet interface, PCI-card internal cable modem (recently submitted to CableLabs for certification) and 3Com's USB adapter kit.
