direct marketing has been a substantial business since the early '50s. It was the application of the basic principles of direct "ownership" of the customer and his demographics to the computer business that was DELL's unique contributions. Even the cash management which is so large a part of DELL's success was done (and in some ways done better) by others, likewise the tight linkage to supply chain management. I did some consulting with a large direct vendor in the early '80s who had close to 30 days of "negative inventory" through very close and favorable supplier relationships.
