How about some more useless but more relevant information. IDE is an acronym for Integrated Drive Electronics. It used to be that each type of disk drive had it's own controller card. The IDE standard placed the specific controller logic in the drive allowing for a standard interface, which in turn allowed the standard pc configurations, which led to clone makers and to Dell.
