Global chip demand seen up 12.6% in 1999
TOKYO, May 25 (Reuters) - Major chip makers expect global demand for semiconductors to grow 12.6 percent in 1999, an industry group said on Tuesday.

The Electronic Industries Association of Japan said in a report that the figure compared with a 8.4 percent fall in 1998.

The report said the expected recovery in chip demand was mainly due to such factors as a growing market for personal computers and peripherals and expansion of the markey for digital mobile telecoms equipment.

The report said chip makers also expect semiconductor demand to grow 14.3 percent in 2000, 15.3 percent in 2001 and 13.0 percent in 2002.

The report is based on a survey of forecasts by 68 chip makers belonging to the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics group.
