Seriously, aren't there some remote-style wireless keyboard add-ons?
Of course, you'd have to make sure the player control window had the focus at all times.

All I used my TV-out for was DVD movies. But since no-one's developed a remote control for software DVD player (hint, STB!), I bit the bullet and bought a true DVD player last weekend. It sure sucked to have to go to the computer to pause or rewind the movie

I had the same problem. I picked up a logitech wireless mouse/keyboard combo from surplusauction.com for $33. Wouldn't want to use it for everyday use, but it works great to control the DVD movies. You get beyond about 10 feet and you have to point it right at the computer though (mine's an older IR model). They have some radio ones for sale right now (I've never used any of the models on sale now, so I'm not endorsing them, but I do like surplus auction):
