CDG reviews location technology progress

COSTA MESA, Calif.—The CDMA Development Group announced its
location technology team, comprised of 38 engineers from 19 companies,
met in Baltimore, Md., to discuss the progress and future plans on three
categories of location technology being tested for cdmaOne
networks—in-handset assisted global positioning systems, cell site overlay
infrastructure and hybrid technology inherent to Code Division Multiple
Access timing systems.

‘‘Testing multiple technology solutions is of paramount importance in the
CDG team activity. We are currently in trial with three different approaches
and it is likely that operators will elect to incorporate multiple solutions to fit
unique market or geographic needs,'' said Perry LaForge, executive director
of the CDG.

‘‘We anticipate our next forum to take place late in 1999 or early 2000 as
more trial results are available. The team is concurrently working on
developing test plans and criteria to assist with pre-deployment testing
activities for the entire CDMA community,'' he said.

The CDG is a nonprofit trade association formed to foster the worldwide
development, implementation and use of cdmaOne technology.
