RealNetworks Announces Plans to Integrate and Distribute the Macromedia Flash 4
Player Technology With RealSystem G2

New Agreement Provides Content Creators With More Powerful and Easier to Use
Animation Capabilities

SAN FRANCISCO, The Macromedia International Users Conference, May 25
/PRNewswire/ -- RealNetworks(R), Inc. (Nasdaq: RNWK), the recognized leader in
media delivery on the Web, today announced it plans to integrate the newly
announced Flash 4 technology from Macromedia (Nasdaq: MACR) into a future
release of RealSystem(TM) G2. Flash 4 integration in RealSystem G2, in
combination with the existing capabilities of Synchronized Multimedia
Integration Language (SMIL), will provide broadcasters with powerful content
navigation and rich media advertising capabilities, and consumers with a more
engaging and interactive media experience.
"Streaming vector-based animation has proved to be an important element
of next generation media programming," said Len Jordan, senior vice president,
Media Systems, RealNetworks, Inc. "We are pleased to be advancing our
relationship with Macromedia to provide the more than 64 million users of
RealPlayer with the latest in streaming vector-based animation."
"Macromedia is excited to be working with RealNetworks to provide a
massive audience of multimedia users the enhancements in Flash 4," said David
Mendels, senior vice president and general manager of Macromedia's Web
Publishing division. "By combining streaming vector-based Flash animation
with RealSystem G2, media companies large and small will be able to provide
their users with a richer, more compelling interactive media experience.
Working with RealNetworks furthers Macromedia's mission of adding life to the
Web."
The latest version of the Flash authoring software, Flash 4 was announced
earlier this week and introduces powerful new features to help developers
quickly build resolution-independent Flash animations that incorporate rich
interactivity.

About RealSystem G2
RealSystem G2, the next-generation media delivery system, provides the
highest quality streaming media, reliability and scalability for the Internet
and corporate intranets. SureStream(TM) transport technology enables reliable
and continuous end-user playback under real-world network conditions. With
SureStream, single media files now dynamically scale to deliver the highest
quality RealAudio(R) and RealVideo(R) to users at all connection rates.
RealSystem G2 also supports Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language
(SMIL), the W3C standard for Web-based multimedia, which enables rich
multi-stream content to be delivered over typical modem connections with new
data types such as RealPix(TM), RealText(R) and Flash 4 from Macromedia.

RealNetworks Streaming Media Market Leadership
There are now more than 64 million registered unique users of RealPlayer,
allowing the RealPlayer to enjoy the largest absolute growth of any consumer
desktop application in 1998, according to Media Metrix. Actual usage of
RealPlayer has also grown dramatically, with Media Metrix reporting that the
number of unduplicated home users in the US climbed by more than 300% to
15.5 million in December 1998, compared to 3.5 million consumers who used the
RealPlayer in December 1997. RealNetworks continues to maintain a more than
85% share of the streaming media market. (Source:
