have you ever considered emailing the seller prior to the close of bidding? just to see if he responds? if he doesn't, that might be an early warning sign?

Definitely. I look for no shades, and lots of feedback with little or no negatives. They are all competing for our business, so the good ones keep their records clean.

The escrow idea is good but it's a little too involved and kind of expensive.
