<<There seems to a fixation on this thread that the Chinese (and all orientals for that matter) are somehow alien.>>

Please, let's be careful with the sweeping generalizations ("a fixation on this thread"). The *Thread* is nothing more than the compiled opinions of many different individuals. Not intending to direct this specifically at you, w., but it did provide a convenient place to make a point that is important to me. Thanks. ...Tim (whew; it's hot around here lately!)

WM - OT OT (last one to WM) There seems to a fixation on this thread that the Chinese (and all orientals for that matter) somehow alien. That is flat out racist.

First, I did not lump the Chinese in with the WW-II Japanese, and I take offense that you would paint me with that. I admit to a lack of complete understanding of the cultural differences between us and the Chinese or even the modern day Japanese. My point was and is only that different cultures can and do value life differently (to put it in your words "The Japanese soldier was trained to believe capture to be most shameful, for himself and his family."). Read my last post to Maurice. You seem to want to paint anyone who points out that there are difference in cultures as some racist slime. Life is not so simple.

Clark

PS Your thesis is that the 'orientals' value life differently. I hold that there are examples of indiference to life in all cultures, East or West. The difference between the Rape of Nanking and the destruction of Hiroshima might be said to be technological.

Completely OT to the OT. In regards to judgements, although I agree that the Allies committed atrocities, I would hardly compare the Rape of Nanking to Hiroshima or Nagasaki. The last two had at least debatable strategic importance, whereas Nanking was almost entirely gratuitious. A better comparison would be Dresden which was almost completely gratuitious.

PPS Further replies will be via PM.
