<Big Ooops: Y2K Test Knocks Out Fiji's Telecommunications>

LOL - I saw that too. Big ooops for a very little country. Too bad it didn't happen in Tahiti. That's where the "ex" is going. Trying to get him to cancel that trip and stockpile food/water in his luxury highrise has been fruitless. Wonder why? <ggg>

Gonna send him that article.

Wanna hear something funny? We talked last week and I asked where his next trip was going to be. He's a sweetie, but sometimes just doesn't "get it".

Started bragging about what a great deal he got on this cruise on the Sea Goddess. For those who don't know. Sea Goddess is probably the most expensive little ship in the world. Unlimited top-of-the-line champagne & caviar gratis. [Well, not really gratis cause you pay thru the nose to not have to sign a chit.]

We did the Sea Goddess bit to Bali a few years back. It was very, very nice. Only 75 on board, including a few Rockefellers. [Very nice, down-to-earth people.]

Anyway ... of all places he's going to ... now ... is Greece and Turkey! Not the best of times. Greece and Turkey are very unhappy with NATO and U.S. these days. Oh well. Odds are that things will be OK. Local ports really rely on these luxury trips. Now Athens and Istanbul may be different stories.

But ... I definitely would not want to be in Tahiti during Y2K rollover. Papeete [Tahiti] was pretty yucky. Out-islands were nice. Bora Bora was beautiful. Nonetheless, almost all food is flown in from France, and not grown on the islands. Besides New Years is in the middle of Typhoon season.

Ever check mileage between French Polynesia and France??

<Telecom Fiji's Web site, tfl.com.fj , now contains a
dead link to its Year 2000 information page. (Ooops again?)
>

Maybe those phone lines are still down?

news.com -- Linked telecom infrastructure could pose Y2K risks

computerworld.com

The global telecommunications infrastructure is linked, perhaps more
than any other critical industry, and so breakdowns anywhere along
the chain could lead to far-reaching disruptions, say officials who
are monitoring year 2000 computer preparations worldwide.
