Intel, H-P To Disclose New Chip Architecture Wed. >INTC By Christopher Grimes 05/25/1999 Dow Jones News Service (Copyright (c) 1999, Dow Jones & Company, Inc.) NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Hoping to get as many software programmers to support its next-generation chip design as possible, Intel Corp. (INTC) will post the genetic code for its IA-64 chip architecture on the Internet Wednesday. The design, which Intel is developing with Hewlett-Packard Co. (HWP), has been available only to select software designers such as Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) up until now. But Intel and H-P have decided to place the basic recipe book for IA-64 on the Web to encourage people to begin writing code for the chip now. Without a lot of software to support it, any chip - no matter how fast - is pretty much worthless. The expected action Wednesday comes only weeks after Intel established a fund to foster IA-64-compatible software. "It's likely they will pick up a few more developers" earlier by making the code public now, said Drew Peck, an analyst at SG Cowen & Co. The IA-64 design will be the basis for the long-awaited Merced chip and its progeny. (The 'IA' stands for 'Intel Architecture' and the '64' refers to amount of data that the chip can execute at one time. Intel's current processors are all 32-bit designs.) The move also shows that the chip's instruction set is stable enough for others to begin working with it, Peck said. This is significant, given the negative reaction last summer when Intel said there would be a six-month delay in the Merced rollout. Since then, the company has stuck to its revised schedule. Samples of the chips are expected to be built this summer, and Intel sees full production happening by the middle of 2000. Wednesday's expected move "is also a message to potential customers that this will be on schedule," Peck said. Earlier this month, Intel formed a $250 million venture capital fund called Intel 64 Fund LLC, with Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ), Dell Computer Corp. (DELL), Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI), Hewlett-Packard and NEC Corp. (NIPNY) acting as co-investors. -Christopher Grimes (201) 938-5253 (END) DOW JONES NEWS 05-25-99 05:08 PM
