Heard from a Big 5 today that IBM is making a play to buy SEBL.

Why would IBM form Centerpoint, a wholly-owned subsidiary with an independent board built around its acquisition of Software Artistry, only to months later attempt to buy Siebel? And do you really think Thomas Siebel would want to be controlled by Lou Gestner or anyone?

If that's a rumor flying around, my guess is that it's propogated by people wanting to artificially move the stock price.

I think that IBM would by Vantive if they bought anyone. I can't see Tom Siebel selling to anyone.

Not likely unless Tom really wants to stick it to Oracle. This is not like the Lotus deal where MSOFT had emerged as a Lotus killer. IBM is willing to make a big investment but is probably very pleased with the SEBL/DB2 linkup. SEBL leads the industry and has no need to sell at any price near here....
