I've seen some situations where that kind of arrangement makes sense.

Usually they involve HUGE multinationals with billion-dollar tax liabilities worldwide. Often the complexity (and overhead cost) related to these arrangements is small potatoes compared to the savings which result from transacting certain businesses in the most favorable tax regions.

I have never in my experience seen a company the size of Valence which can benefit significantly from these arrangements. Hence my view that they're just trying to confuse the financials....
