Beer and Alcohol Companies Continue Fight to Lower Taxes

MEXICO CITY, May. 27 (El Universal/Infolatina)-- Mexican distillers
and brewers are continuing negotiations to reduce special tax on the
production of alcohol, arguing that high taxes have reduction domestic
consumption. At the beginning of 1998 the authorities raised the tax on
the production of beer six points to 25 percent, while the tax on
spirits was increased ten points to 60 percent. The Finance Ministry
repeatedly states that any reduction must be decided by Legislators.
