I think that the Japanese could become bankers to the world, with huge foreign exchange surpluses. At one point I thought they ought to put the Yen on a gold standard, but mining technologies are so ingenious and efficient now that over-production of gold is a real possibility. Still, I guess if converted some of their huge surplus into gold, and promised to convert Yen into gold at some fixed rate, they could control the gold market and make their currency the world standard. But maybe they don't want to do this.
