Infinitely old. Infinitely large. Olbers' critics need to look at what he was arguing against. It's actually an argument used to counter the metaphysical contention of the eternal existence of matter and the universe. I think it may have been a counter to one of Kant's cosmological speculations.

I've seen the contention that inflation dilutes luminosity, but aren't some of brighest objects we know also those that are farthest from us and receding the fastest?
