COMSAT Peru Inaugurates Lima Service With Advanced Wireless Telecommunications Network
Lima Area Businesses to Benefit from Managed Communications Services for Voice, Data, and Multimedia Applications
LIMA, Peru, May 26 /PRNewswire/ -- COMSAT Peru has inaugurated service on its advanced new wireless telecommunications network for business and corporate customers throughout the capital city of Lima.

With this service, COMSAT Peru provides a wide array of on-demand voice, data, video, and multimedia capabilities for applications such as Internet access, Intranet, computer networking, and videoconferencing.

This network employs technology known as local multi-point distribution system (LMDS) developed by Lucent Technologies. By using small rooftop microwave antennas to connect customer sites to COMSAT Peru's central hub, customers bypass traditional wire systems and forego costly and time-consuming fiber cable installation. According to officials from both COMSAT Peru and Lucent Technologies, the system is the first of its kind operating in Latin America.

''Multinational and domestic corporations operating in Lima need reliable communications that offer speed, security, capacity, and flexibility at a reasonable price,'' said James J. Welch, president and general manager of COMSAT International. ''COMSAT's new service permits businesses, regardless of size, to share a secure broadband network without the major investment of owning and operating their own dedicated system,'' Welch explained.

COMSAT's system uses Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), an advanced networking protocol that enables companies simultaneously to transmit high- speed, high-bandwidth applications over a single network.

''COMSAT Peru provides businesses with a diversity of secure communications solutions, from supporting sensitive financial transactions to monitoring product inventory and shipping,'' said Luis Alejos, general manager of COMSAT Peru. ''With the increasing demand for Internet access, COMSAT also offers local Internet Service Providers more cost-effective options for quickly deploying service to their customers. Additionally, using the cutting-edge ATM technology, we can provide full-motion video services which are widely used in the retail industry to monitor and safeguard key locations and activities,'' Alejos said.

With the deregulation of Peru's telecommunications, COMSAT Peru plans to expand its service offerings nationwide and internationally later this year.
