The NY Times is reporting that Entrust is going to compete with VRSN in selling certificates to Web sites. They'll charge about 15% less, and say they have found their way around what VRSN and most everyone else thought was a barrier to competition -- VRSN's lock on browser root certificates. Entrust also argues that VRSN's ability to use totally secure browser root certificates will begin experiencing problems this December as those certificates expire.

I don't have a handle on the technical issue regarding root certificates, but it does seem that the move by Entrust unsettles the digital certificate system a bit, which short term is probably not that helpful on the IDX end, either. The less confidence users have in the digital certificate security, the less useful authentication will seem. However, this rivalry may also provide IDX with some bargaining leverage with Entrust and Verisign, as well. And the short term may be over before IDX systems really get incorporated into the overall web security scheme.
